Man Killed After Being Hit by Tractor Trailer
Boston, Massachusetts – December 24, 2012

An 80-year-old man was killed Monday afternoon after being struck by a tractor trailer. The fatal big rig accident happened at around 1:30 p.m. near a loading dock at Saint Elizabeth’s Medical Center. Authorities say the tractor trailer, owned by healthcare linen company Angelica, was backing up when it struck and killed the man. CBS reports that no charges have been filed at this time against the driver of the truck. An investigation is underway.

Tractor Trailer Accident Kills Three
Bartow County, Georgia – December 19, 2012

Three people were killed early Wednesday morning when a tractor trailer collided with a support pillar, sending a freeway sign directly into the path of another big rig. The fatal truck accident occurred near mile marker 296 on Interstate 75 in Bartow County.

Authorities say a northbound tractor trailer driven by 58-year-old Hugh Duling III drifted into the shoulder, then hit a guard rail before hitting the concrete pillar on the southbound side of I-75. The tractor trailer ended up overturning and catching fire. A second truck hit the highway sign left in the wake of the first accident, causing the truck to run off the highway.

According to WGCL-TV, both the driver and passenger in the second truck were killed. An investigation is ongoing.

Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck by Big Rig
New York City, New York – December 13, 2012

A 69-year-old Bronx man was struck and killed by a big rig on Thursday afternoon. The fatal accident occurred at around 1:25 p.m. at the intersection of East 138th Street and St. Ann’s Avenue in the Bronx. Authorities say Ignecio Cubano was crossing the street at East 138th Street when the big rig, attempting to make a right turn from St. Ann’s, struck and killed Cubano. According to DNAinfo.com, no criminal charges have been filed. An investigation is underway.

33-Year-Old Woman Killed in Truck Accident
Prairie County, Arkansas – December 11, 2012

A woman lost her life on Tuesday afternoon when her vehicle was pinned between two tractor trailers. The fatal truck accident occurred on Interstate 40 at around 12:30 p.m. Authorities say 33-year-old Kristin G. Jackson was stopped behind a truck when a second tractor trailer slammed into Jackson’s vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Justin Jackson, who was also in the Escort, sustained injuries in the truck crash and was taken to a hospital in Little Rock. His condition and relation to Kristin Jackson are at this time unknown. According to 5 News, no other injuries were reported. An investigation is underway.

Boston University Student Killed in Tractor Trailer Accident
Brighton, Massachusetts – December 6, 2012

A Boston University student bicyclist was killed Thursday morning after being hit by a tractor trailer. The fatal truck accident happened at around 8:30 a.m. as 23-year-old photojournalism graduate student Christopher Weigl was riding in the bike lane on Commonwealth Avenue. Authorities say Weigl was hit by the eighteen-wheeler as the vehicle attempted to make a right turn onto St. Paul from Commonwealth Ave. According to witnesses, Weigl didn’t have time to react and was caught underneath the truck.

The Boston Herald reports that this is the fifth fatality of this nature this year. The Boston City Council will be holding a hearing to discuss ways to improve the city’s cycling infrastructure to make it safer for bicyclists.

Two Killed in Rear-End Truck Accident
Marion County, Florida – December 2, 2012

A mother and her son were killed Sunday morning when their passenger vehicle was rear-ended by a tractor trailer. The fatal accident occurred on Interstate 75 in Marion County, Florida. Authorities say moments before the truck accident, the passenger vehicle had been involved in a hit and run accident. The mother and son were attempting to get out of the car when the tractor trailer slammed into it, causing both vehicles to catch fire.

According to Bay News 9, the truck driver was able to get out of his rig, but both the mother and son were killed in the fire. An investigation is ongoing.

One Dead, Others Injured in Tractor Trailer Accident
Martin County, Florida – November 29, 2012

A multiple vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer left one person dead on Thursday. The truck accident happened at around 8:00 a.m. on Interstate 95 near the Kanner Highway overpass. Authorities say six vehicles and a tractor trailer were involved in the wreck, which culminated with the tractor trailer coming to rest on top of a passenger vehicle. The person killed in the crash was in the passenger vehicle crushed by the tractor trailer. Four other people were taken to area hospitals, two of which were listed in serious condition.

According to TC Palm, the Florida Highway Patrol is continuing their investigation of the crash.

Tractor Trailer Crash Kills Woman
Hull, Wisconsin – November 15, 2012

A tractor trailer and a passenger vehicle collided on Thursday morning, killing an elderly woman driving the car. The tractor trailer accident happened before 10:30 a.m. on Highway 29 near Maple Road.

Authorities say the eastbound tractor trailer crossed the median and stopped. It remains unclear how the vehicles collided, but authorities did say a woman died as a result of the crash. The Marathon County Sheriff’s Department is waiting to release the identity of the victim once the next of kin is notified.

The Wausau Daily Herald states that there have already been a total of 14 traffic deaths in Marathon County, which averages roughly 19 per year. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Four Injured in Semi Accident
Selbyville, Delaware – November 10, 2012

A semi caused a multiple vehicle accident on Saturday morning that injured four people. The truck accident happened at around 9:30 a.m. on U.S. 113 just north of McCabe Road.

Authorities say the semi driver was attempting to change lanes and collided with a Honda Civic, sending it across the median and into oncoming traffic. A Chevy Tahoe then collided with the passenger side of the Civic, injuring the driver and passenger, both 21-year-old women. Two people in the Chevy Tahoe were also injured in the crash.

Del Mar VA Now reports that the truck driver was not injured in the crash. The accident is still under investigation and charges are pending.

Man Seriously Injured After Semi Hits Vehicle on I-10 Shoulder
Santa Rosa County, Florida – November 4, 2012

A man sitting in his pickup truck on the shoulder of Interstate 10 was seriously injured after a semi collided with a trailer attached to his truck. The semi accident happened on the I-10 bridge at Mile Marker 19 at around 12:40 p.m.

Authorities say the semi truck driver drifted onto the shoulder but was unable to brake in time to avoid a collision with the trailer, which was carrying a horse. Michael Estes, 57, was seriously injured in the accident. The truck driver, 45-year-old Jimmy Green, suffered minor injuries. The horse survived the crash, police said.

PNJ.com reports that both men were wearing their seat belts, and alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the crash. Green was issued a citation for failure to stay in a lane.

Truck Driver Dead In Fiery Crash
Tampa, Florida – November 2, 2012

A truck driver was killed Friday after two semi trucks collided on Interstate 75 in Tampa. The fatal truck accident occurred during rush hour traffic near the E Fowler Avenue freeway entrance.

Authorities say a Ford Focus crossed into the path of a semi while merging onto the freeway. The semi driver, 48-year-old Paul Pitts, tried to avoid the Ford by moving to an inside lane that was occupied by another semi truck. Pitts’s rig hit the second semi, which slammed into a wall and the freeway median before erupting into flames. The driver of the second semi, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The Florida Highway Patrol says charges are pending.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that this is the second major accident on this highway in a month. Although the crash happened in a construction zone, investigators have not said it was a factor in the crash.

Semi Broadsides Car, Killing One
Blaine County, Oklahoma – October 27, 2012

A semi collided with a pickup truck on Saturday morning, killing the passenger in the pickup. The fatal truck accident occurred just before 10:00 a.m. at an unmarked intersection where County Road 0590 meets County Road 2600. The semi was traveling northbound on County Road 2600 when it broadsided the pickup truck. Amber Rachelle Poulton, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to News OK, the drivers of both the semi and the pickup were taken to local hospitals to treat their injuries. An investigation into the truck accident is ongoing.

Infant Killed in Terrible Truck Accident
Terrell, Texas – October 23, 2012

A two-month-old infant was killed and two others were injured on Monday in a multiple vehicle crash involving a tractor trailer. The fatal truck accident occurred at the intersection of State Highway 34 and U.S. 80 at around 8:30 p.m.

According to authorities, a Kenworth tractor trailer struck a Honda passenger vehicle before colliding with a Toyota Camry and a Nissan Maxima. Emergency responders were able to extricate 21-year-old Porsche Sirls and 20-year-old Donavan Washington from the Maxima, but two-month-old Skye Stone, who was also in the Maxima, was pronounced dead at the scene. Sirls and Washington were taken to a local hospital to treat their injuries.

According to inforney.com, the Terrell Police are currently investigating the cause of the fatal truck crash.

One Dead After Truck Plows Through Diner
Nevada, Missouri – October 19, 2012

One man was killed and three other restaurant patrons were injured on Friday after a big rig slammed into a diner in Nevada, Missouri. The fatal truck accident occurred at the Quick Dine restaurant along U.S. 71.

Authorities say the truck was travelling southbound on U.S. 71 when it swerved in order to avoid hitting a car in its path. The truck was unsuccessful, as it slammed into the car before plowing into the Quick Dine. Joseph Cole, who was sitting at a booth in the Quick Dine, was struck by the truck and pronounced dead at the scene. Three others in the restaurant were taken to area hospitals. One man remains in critical condition.

The Kansas City Star reports that the semi driver was uninjured in the crash. An investigation is ongoing.

Big Rig Accident Kills One, Injures Another
Winslow, Arizona – October 17, 2012

A woman was killed and a man was injured after both were struck by a tractor trailer in Winslow, Arizona on Wednesday evening.

The truck accident occurred on the 2200 block of North Park Drive at around 8:08 p.m. Heather Betoney, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim, 33-year-old Sterling Long, was initially taken to a local hospital only to be airlifted to another hospital in Flagstaff to treat an injured leg.

The Arizona Journal reports that an investigation into the accident is ongoing. Once completed, the Navajo County District Attorney’s Office will review the accident report.

Construction Worker Injured After Being Struck by Semi
West Salem, Illinois – October 16, 2012

A road crew worker was injured Tuesday morning after being struck by a big rig in a construction zone. The accident happened near West Salem, Illinois just north of Bone Gap Road. Authorities say a 2009 International semi trailer was heading southbound through a construction zone when it struck 56-year-old road worker Larry W. Biggerstaff, who was airlifted to Deaconess Hospital for treatment.

According to Channel 14 News, Biggerstaff is currently in fair condition. The semi driver was uninjured in the accident.

Truck Accident Kills One, Injures Three
Atlanta, Georgia – October 15, 2012

One man was killed and three others were injured in Atlanta, Georgia on Monday night, after a tractor trailer ran through a traffic light. The fatal truck accident involved multiple vehicles.

Authorities say the driver of a big rig ran a red light and slammed into the driver’s side of a Toyota Solara. The truck then collided head-on with a Nissan Altima before hitting a Toyota Camry. The man driving the Solara was killed in the accident. The woman driving the Altima suffered serious injuries and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Both the tractor trailer driver and the driver of the Camry sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

According to WTVM, an investigation is ongoing and charges pending.

Semi Runs Traffic Light, Kills Man in Truck Crash
Montpelier, Ohio – October 11, 2012

A man was killed in a tractor trailer crash on Thursday in Williams County, Ohio when his pickup truck was struck by a big rig. The fatal crash occurred at around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Route 15 and U.S. 20A.

Authorities say 39-year-old Jason C. Saneholtz was driving north on Route 15 when an eastbound tractor trailer went through a stop sign at U.S. 20A and collided with his pickup. Saneholtz’s truck was pushed through the intersection before hitting a utility pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Toledo Blade reports that although alcohol was not a factor, charges against the tractor trailer driver are pending.

Two Dead in Chain Reaction Crash Caused by Big Rig
Frederick County, Virginia – October 5, 2012

Two people were killed and another injured on Friday night in a fatal crash caused by a tractor trailer. The accident occurred on I-81 in Frederick County, Virginia.

State Troopers say the big rig slammed into a Jeep Cherokee at “full speed,” pushing the Jeep into the rear of a Chrysler before exploding into a “ball of fire.” The driver and a passenger in the Jeep died at the scene of the crash. Another passenger was removed from the Jeep and taken to an area hospital. No one in the Chrysler was injured.

According to NVDaily.com, the driver of the truck was cited for reckless driving. An investigation into the fatal truck crash is ongoing.

One Dead After Tractor Trailer Hits Stranded Motorist
Providence, Rhode Island – September 28, 2012

A 39-year-old man was killed Friday night after he and his broken-down SUV were hit by a tractor trailer. The fatal accident occurred in Providence, Rhode Island near exit 25 on Interstate 95.

Authorities say Douglas Moore’s SUV broke down in the fast lane of I-95. Traffic began to form behind his vehicle, but a semi travelling at a high speed failed to slow down when approaching the line of slowed cars. The tractor trailer veered from his lane to avoid hitting the line of cars, and in the process hit Moore and his SUV. Moore was standing outside of his SUV when the accident occurred. He was rushed to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries.

The tractor trailer driver did not sustain injuries in the crash. According to ABC6, it is unclear whether the tractor trailer driver will be charged criminally in the accident. An investigation is ongoing.

Rear-End Truck Accident Kills Two, Another Seriously Injured
Nahunta, Georgia – September 27, 2012

A tractor trailer accident near Nahunta, Georgia killed two people, including a 10-month-old infant. The fatal crash occurred at around 10 a.m. Thursday morning on U.S. Highway 82 just east of Nahunta.

Authorities say 32-year-old April McClaughlin Thornton and 10-month-old Chase Kemp were killed when the car they were traveling in was rear-ended by a tractor trailer. Thornton was driving the vehicle when the accident occurred. Another passenger in Thornton’s vehicle, 48-year-old Mary Hill Rooks, was airlifted to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center in serious condition. Neither the driver nor the passenger in the Peterbilt tractor trailer were injured in the crash.

According to the Florida Times-Union, no charges have been filed against the tractor trailer driver. The investigation into Thursday’s truck accident on Highway 82 is ongoing.

Tractor Trailer Kills Person on I-70
Vigo County, Indiana – September 16, 2012

A tractor trailer was involved in a multiple vehicle crash Sunday evening in Vigo County, Indiana, killing one person and seriously injuring three others. The fatal crash happened on Interstate 70 not far from mile marker 12 at around 6:55 p.m.

Authorities say traffic was slowed on I-70 due to two broken-down tractor trailers. The driver of a Volvo big rig failed to see slowed traffic, and viciously rear-ended a Chevy S-10 pickup truck, causing it to push into the back of a Chevy Colorado pickup. The Colorado then collided with both broken-down tractor trailers.

The driver of the Colorado, 55-year-old Lisa Carder, was pronounced dead at the scene. Carder’s husband, a passenger in the Colorado, was airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital to treat his injuries. The driver and passenger of the S-10 were also airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital.

According to WIBC, both sustained life-threatening injuries.

An investigation is ongoing.

Tractor Trailer Kills Person on I-70
Richmond, Indiana – September 12, 2012

A man standing beside his vehicle was struck and killed by a tractor trailer Wednesday morning on Interstate 70. The fatal crash occurred on the eastbound side of the Interstate near Richmond, Indiana. According to authorities, the man that was killed had been involved in a minor crash prior to being hit by the tractor trailer. The victim was standing on the side of the Interstate near mile marker 145 when he was struck. WHIOTV reports that the man’s identity has not yet been released by authorities. An investigation is ongoing.

Tractor Trailer Hits Military Vehicle, Killing Guardsman
Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana – September 11, 2012

A Louisiana Army National Guardsman was killed Tuesday afternoon in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, after an 18-wheeler rear-ended a military Humvee. The fatal crash occurred at around 3:20 p.m. on Interstate 49.

Sergeant Kevin Dean Weiner, 30, was driving the Humvee at the rear of a military convoy when his vehicle was rear-ended by the 18-wheeler. Sgt. Weiner’s vehicle lost control after impact and overturned in the median of the Interstate. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Another Guardsman in Sgt. Weiner’s vehicle was moderately injured in the crash, and taken to Natchitoches Parish Hospital for treatment.

The guardsmen were heading home from active duty providing post-hurricane Isaac relief to the citizens of Louisiana when the crash occurred. According to The Magnolia Reporter, the tractor trailer driver was uninjured in the crash. An investigation is ongoing.

One Dead, One Injured After Tractor Trailer Hits Pickup Truck
Hinton, Virginia – September 10, 2012

A 65-year-old man died shortly after midnight on Monday after his pickup truck was hit by a speeding tractor trailer. The fatal accident occurred at around 12:40 a.m. near the intersection of Rawley Pike and Peake Mountain Road in Hinton, Virginia. State Police say the tractor trailer crossed the center line and collided head-on with the pickup truck, killing William Charleton of Seneca Rocks, West Virginia.

The driver of the tractor trailer, 44-year-old Teddy Long, has been charged with reckless driving. Speed may have been a factor in the crash, according to Virginia State Police. WHSV reports that Long only sustained minor injuries in the wreck.

One Dead After Two Trucks Collide in Auburn
Auburn, California – September 7, 2012

One person was killed Friday after a flatbed truck and another truck collided head-on, starting a vehicle fire. The fatal big rig accident happened on Highway 49 in Auburn, California at around 8:15 a.m. At this time, authorities are uncertain what caused the collision. News 10 reports that a passerby was able to put out the subsequent vehicle fire with a fire extinguisher. The victim in the crash has not been identified, as authorities have not yet notified the family.

Three Injuries Reported After Train Collides With Semi, Passenger Vehicle
San Diego, California – August 31, 2012

Three people were injured Friday morning in a crash involving a Coaster train, a tractor trailer and a passenger vehicle. The crash occurred at around 7:40 a.m. at the intersection of Washington Street and Pacific Highway in San Diego, California.

The commuter train initially hit the truck, which then hit a Volkswagon Jetta. According to reports, the truck driver had a green light, but traffic was backed up in front of him when the train was approaching and he could not move forward or backward off the tracks to avoid the Coaster. The impact of the train and the truck forced the trailer section of the truck to slice open the top of the Jetta, pinning its occupants underneath. Three women in the car were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. The extent of their injuries are at this time unknown.

According to 10News, no one on the Coaster train was injured. An investigation is ongoing.

Amish Man Killed After Tractor Trailer Hits Buggy
Canton, Missouri – August 30, 2012

An Amish man driving a horse-drawn buggy was killed on Thursday after being struck by a utility truck near Canton, Missouri. The fatal accident occurred south of Canton on U.S. 61.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, the utility truck was attempting to change lanes when it slammed into the back of the buggy. Chris Yoder, 42, was thrown from the buggy and taken to a Quincy, Illinois hospital where he later died of his injuries.

AP Newswire reports that the truck driver was not injured in the crash, and there were no other passengers in either vehicle. An investigation is underway.

Three Injured, Two Critically, After Semi Rear Ends Car in New Jersey
Leonia, New Jersey – August 25, 2012

A tractor trailer in the express lane of the New Jersey Turnpike failed to slow down in time to avoid hitting a passenger vehicle Saturday night. Three people were seriously injured in the truck crash, which occurred in Leonia at around 12:30 a.m.

The tractor trailer driver apparently did not see that traffic had slowed in the express lane, and viciously rear-ended a passenger vehicle, pinning it against a concrete barrier and dragging it for roughly a half mile, investigators said. The tractor trailer then struck another vehicle, and the first passenger vehicle was then pinned underneath the tractor trailer. The initial impact ejected one passenger in the first vehicle, and the other two passengers were trapped in the car for over two hours.

According to reports, two of the passengers are in critical condition. The other person injured is stable. The condition of the second vehicle involved in the crash is unknown. An investigation into Saturday’s crash is ongoing.

Utility Truck Hits Utah State Trooper, Sending Him to Hospital
Lambs Canyon, Utah – August 22, 2012

A 14-year veteran with the Utah Highway Patrol lost four fingers after he was hit by a utility truck on Wednesday morning. Sgt. Chris Dunn was assisting victims of a previous crash on the eastbound side of Interstate 80 near the Lambs Canyon exit. A utility truck then struck Sgt. Dunn as he was getting back into his vehicle. The accident took off the door to Sgt. Dunn’s vehicle, along with four of his fingers. He was taken to a local hospital where surgeons worked to reattach his fingers.

According to Fox 13, it will take days before doctors will know if the surgery was successful. The 21-year-old utility truck driver has not been cited, though the Utah Highway Patrol said he was negligent in the accident.

Inattentive Truck Driver Cause of Upstate New York Crash That Killed Six, Authorities Say

Antwerp, New York – August 17, 2012

New York State Police said Friday that a trucker’s inattention caused a fiery crash that killed six people last month in Antwerp, New York. Tractor trailer driver James Mills, Jr. was hauling a truck full of yogurt when failed to notice traffic stopped for a paving project. The 18-wheeler rear-ended an SUV, starting a chain reaction crash involving six other passenger vehicles.

Killed in the crash was 42-year-old Laurie Dana, her 69-year-old mother-in-law Janet Dana, her two daughters Lauryn and Caitlyn, and a family friend. Maryann Gregory, who was driving the SUV, later died of her injuries at a nearby hospital. The driver of another vehicle hit in the incident was initially listed in critical condition in the aftermath of the crash, but has since been moved to good condition at Upstate Medical University.

Though no charges have been filed as of now, a district attorney for Jefferson County will soon determine if charges will be filed against Mills for his role in the crash. Mills was operating a truck owned by MBM Customized Foodservice Distribution. The Republic writes that MBM has been involved in 75 truck accidents since 2010. One of those crashes killed a person, and 23 others resulted in at least one injury, according to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration data.

Box Truck and Tractor Trailer Collide, Killing One
Newark, Delaware – August 16, 2012

A box truck and a tractor trailer collided early Thursday morning on Interstate 95 in Delaware, leaving one man dead. The fatal truck crash occurred at around 3:20 a.m. near a toll booth at Route 896 on the Delaware Expressway.

Authorities say a northbound 18-wheeler, driven by 35-year-old Abubaker Jamal, made an illegal U-turn at an emergency crossing point on the Interstate. A southbound box truck driven by 30-year-old Abodunrin Akinyanju could not avoid the fatal collision, authorities said. Akinyanju hit the back of the trailer and continued down the Interstate before the truck overturned, causing the box portion to come off of the truck.

According to Delaware Online, Akinyanju was trapped in the truck for some time, and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. At this time, no charges have been filed against Jamal, who was uninjured in the crash. An investigation is underway.

Semi Driver Cited for Reckless Driving in Crash With Bus
Rockingham County, Virginia – August 14, 2012

Seven people were injured early Tuesday morning after a tractor trailer collided with a bus on Interstate 81 in Rockingham County, Virginia. According to Virginia State Police, the crash occurred at around 4:00 a.m.

The tractor trailer driver hit the New York City-bound bus, forcing both the bus and the big rig into the median of the highway. The tractor trailer ended up overturning, and 29-year-old driver Dean Crawford was injured in the crash. The bus driver and five passengers were also taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

Both sides of Interstate 81 were closed for some four hours following the accident. According to NBC 29, Crawford has been charged with reckless driving for his role in the accident. The Virginia State Police are heading up the investigation, which is still ongoing.

Eight Injured When Tractor Trailer Rear-Ends Transit Bus
Granite City, Illinois – August 7, 2012

Eight people were rushed to area hospitals after a big rig rear-ended a Madison County Transit bus stopped at a red light on Tuesday night in Granite City, Illinois. The crash occurred at around 7:00 p.m. at the intersection of Route 3 and Chain of Rocks Road. Authorities say the big rig rear-ended the bus, which was stopped at a red light. The bus was then pushed into the back of a pickup truck. According to reports, five passengers aboard the bus, along with the bus driver and the driver of the pickup truck were taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center. The semi driver was airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

At Least One Dead in Crash Involving Tractor Trailers
Hayward, California – August 6, 2012

At least one person is dead after a crash involving two tractor trailers and a passenger vehicle near Hayward, California. The fatal big rig accident occurred very early in the morning on the northbound side of Highway 238 just south of the Hesperian Boulevard exit.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly crash caused a passenger vehicle to be crushed underneath one of the tractor trailers. First responders attempted to extricate a person in the car that was crushed under the tractor trailer, but there was nothing they could do for the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene. At this time, the identity of the victim is unknown.

According to SF Gate, the crash caused traffic to crawl for two hours after the fatal crash. An investigation is currently underway.

Nine Injuries Reported in Tow Truck Crash
Dundalk, Maryland – August 3, 2012

A tow truck caused an eight vehicle crash in Dundalk, Maryland on Friday, seriously injuring one person and sending eight others to area hospitals. The truck accident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Baltimore Street and North Point Boulevard. A spokesman for the police said the accident occurred when a tow truck left its lane and struck several other vehicles.

At this time, authorities are uncertain what caused the tow truck to leave its lane. The names of those injured have not been released, however, the Washington Post reports that the seriously injured person was rushed to Maryland Shock Trauma for treatment. The county police crash team is heading the investigation onto Friday’s accident.

Construction Zone Truck Crash Kills Two, Seriously Injures Two Others
Westcliffe, Colorado – July 31, 2012

A tractor trailer viciously rear-ended the last in a line of vehicles stopped in a construction zone on Colorado Highway 49, starting a chain reaction crash that left two people dead and two others with serious injuries. A total of six vehicles were involved in the fatal construction zone tuck accident, which occurred on Tuesday near Westcliffe.

The Colorado State Patrol says the tractor trailer driver, 57-year-old Robert White, collided with the last car in a line of vehicles stopped at an active construction site. The impact forced White’s semi off the highway where it hit one of the construction workers and flipped over on its top. White and the construction worker, 20-year-old Jeffrey Mosher, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of another vehicle that was hit, 63-year-old Linda Niemeyer, along with an unidentified passenger, were airlifted to a Denver hospital with serious injuries.

The Republic reports that another driver suffered moderate injuries in the crash. An investigation into Tuesday’s crash in southern Colorado is ongoing.

Semi Crashes Head-On with Van in Arizona, Killing Seven
Phoenix, Arizona – July 29, 2012

A semitrailer collided head-on with a van on Sunday outside of Phoenix, Arizona, killing all seven people in the van. The fiery truck crash occurred on Interstate 10 some 60 miles west of Phoenix at around 11:00 a.m. Authorities say the westbound tractor trailer, travelling an estimated 75 mph and hauling 80,000 pounds of soda, crossed over the median and collided head-on with the eastbound van. The impact caused both vehicles to erupt in flames and veer off the side of the Interstate.

The tractor trailer driver and his wife, who was traveling him, were seriously injured in the crash and taken to Banner Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. According to Inquisitr, the names of the victims in the van have not yet been identified, as the bodies were very badly burned in the wreck. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Two Dead, Others Injured in Massive Pileup in Texas
Odessa, Texas – July 23, 2012

Seventeen vehicles, including four tractor trailers, were involved in a massive crash on both sides of Interstate 20 that killed two people and left three others injured. The fatal crash occurred on Monday after 6:30 p.m. in Odessa, Texas, roughly three miles east of East Loop 338.

According to local authorities, the crash took place during a massive dust storm. Many vehicles slowed due to poor visibility, causing a chain reaction crash on both sides of Interstate 20. Fifty-year-old Jesus Zapata was killed, and 20-year-old Felix Vargas, who was in the same vehicle as Zapata, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died of his injuries. The three people that were injured, 35-year-old truck driver Noel Suchil, 29-year-old Amanda Ruth Shaw and 47-year-old Rosa Maria Ironside were taken to Midland Memorial Hospital. Big Rig Starts Chain Reaction Crash in New York, Kills Six
Antwerp, New York – July 19, 2012

A fiery crash involving a tractor trailer killed six people and critically injured another person on Thursday morning near Antwerp, New York.

The fatal accident occurred at around 9 a.m. on Route 11 near the intersection of Fox Ranch Road. Authorities say several vehicles stopped at a construction zone were rear ended by a tractor trailer. The big rig initially hit a Subaru, forcing it off the road before slamming into a Department of Transportation pickup truck and a Toyota RAV4. The RAV4 immediately burst into flames upon impact, killing all five people in the car.

Laurie Dana, 42, who was driving the RAV4, her daughters Caitlyn, 14, and Lauryn, 11, were killed at the scene of the crash. Cailtyn’s friend, Shannon Planty, 14, and Laurie Dana’s mother-in-law, Janet Dana, 69, were also killed. The driver of the Subaru, Maryann Gregory, 59, was taken to a nearby hospital where she died due to catastrophic injuries, authorities said. The driver of the DOT pickup was pulled from the vehicle before it caught fire and was taken to a nearby hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

According to WWNYTV, the tractor trailer driver that started the chain reaction crash was taken to a nearby hospital for observation and drug and alcohol testing. An investigation into Thursday morning’s tractor trailer accident is ongoing.

Man Killed in California Truck Crash
Arroyo Grande, California – July 14, 2012

A 33-year-old man was killed early Saturday morning after his 1995 Saab collided with a broken-down tractor trailer in Arroyo Grande, California. The fatal truck crash occurred on Highway 1 at around 5:30 a.m.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the semitrailer was blocking both the southbound and northbound lanes of Highway 1 near Woodland Hills Road when the Saab approached the broken-down big rig. According to authorities, the Saab was travelling at 55 to 60 miles per hour when it struck the trailer and left the roadway, eventually slamming into a natural gas pipeline.

The Santa Maria Times writes that the local Sheriff’s Department has not released the name of the man killed pending family notification.

Big Rig Engine Parts Fly Across Atlanta Freeway, Killing Young Boy
Atlanta, Georgia – July 11, 2012

An 8-year-old boy was killed and his mother seriously injured Wednesday night after engine parts flew off of a semitrailer and smashed through their windshield. Authorities say a tractor trailer was heading east near downtown Atlanta when parts of the truck’s transmission came off and flew across the median, smashing into the windshield of a Chevrolet Blazer. The parts flew into the vehicle and struck Jameka French and her son Cameron Mcilwain. According to ABC News, French was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where her arm had to be amputated below the elbow. The boy was killed in the crash. An investigation into the fatal truck accident is ongoing.

Tractor Trailer Crossed Median Before Fatal Crash
Girard, Ohio – July 5, 2012

A Hubbard, Ohio man was killed Thursday afternoon in a crash with a tractor trailer. The fatal crash occurred on Interstate 80 in Girard, Ohio. Highway Patrol officials say 62-year-old Robert Lucarell was driving westbound on Interstate 80 when an eastbound tractor trailer crossed over the median and collided with his vehicle head-on. Lucarell was pronounced dead at the scene. According to WYTV, the tractor trailer driver, 61-year-old Richard Pacholski, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center where he is listed in stable condition. The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing.

Jury Awards Indian Family $36.48 Million After 18-Wheeler Crash
Beaumont, California – June 30, 2012

A Riverside County Superior Court jury has awarded Prakash Sheth and his wife Jashiree Sheth $36.48 million as compensation for a 2010 tractor trailer accident that seriously injured them both, and left Jashiree with catastrophic injuries.

The couple from Mumbai, India were being driven to an airport in southern California by an American relative when their vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler on Interstate 10 in Beaumont. The accident occurred when the big rig, owned and operated by Schneider National, crossed over into the Sheth’s lane and collided with the vehicle, spinning it out of control on the Interstate. The car ultimately hit the freeway median and collided with another vehicle. Everybody in the Sheth’s vehicle was injured in the crash and Jashiree suffered a fracture to her spine that left her paralyzed.

The Riverside jury ruled that Schneider National is liable for $469,490 in past medical expenses, $4.8 million in future medical expenses, $6 million in past pain and suffering and $22 million for future pain and suffering. It is unclear if Schneider National will appeal the ruling.

Double Trailer Big Rig Causes Multiple Vehicle Accident
Agua Dulce, California – June 26, 2012

A total of 15 people were injured Tuesday morning in Agua Dulce, California, after a big rig hauling two trailers filled with sand collided with multiple vehicles. The truck accident occurred at around 9:45 a.m. near the Escondido Canyon exit on the Antelope Valley Freeway. Emergency responders arrived on scene to find cars piled on top of each other as a result of the collision. According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, two out of the 15 people that were injured were rushed to nearby hospitals in critical condition. Some of the victims were trapped in their vehicles for some time following the crash. The Associated Press writes that the cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

18 Wheeler Crash Leaves Three Dead
Jones County, Mississippi – June 22, 2012

A tractor trailer collided with a passenger vehicle Friday morning, killing three people in the car. The fatal accident occurred on Highway 15 in Jones County, Mississippi. According to WLOX, a white sedan containing three people was struck by a tractor trailer, sending the car off the road and into a ditch. First responders found the car flipped over with a crushed roof. All three people in the car were killed in the crash, authorities said. The fatal truck crash is still under investigation.

Former Pastor Awarded $2.5 Million After Suffering TBI in Truck Crash
Bridgeport, Connecticut – June 21, 2012

A former pastor of a Connecticut church, who sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in an accident involving a tractor trailer, was awarded $2.5 million in damages today following a trial in U.S. District Court.

On May 29, 2008, Rev. Kathleen Crockford was stopped behind a vehicle at an intersection in her Volkswagen Beetle when she was rear-ended by a tractor trailer driven by Larry Spencer, forcing the Volkswagen into the vehicle in front of her. Crockford, 59, was unconscious at the scene and had to be airlifted to Hartford Hospital, where she was put into an induced coma. Spencer told authorities that his brakes were not working and he attempted to use the emergency brake prior to impact. Police later determined that his brakes worked fine and that the emergency brake was never engaged.

The Bridgeport, Connecticut jury found that Spencer was negligent in the crash, awarding Crockford $1,273,500 in economic damages and $1,250,000 in non-economic damages. The TBI that Crockford sustained in the accident has led to current symptoms of headaches, memory loss, dizziness, slow mental processing and depression. According to The Day Connecticut, she has not been able to return to work since the accident.

Tractor Trailer Runs Stop Sign, Kills 12-Year-Old Girl
Wasco, California – June 15, 2012

A 12-year-old girl died and 3 others were injured Friday evening a passenger vehicle was hit by a tractor trailer. The fatal truck accident occurred at the intersection of Palm Avenue and McCombs Avenue in Wasco, California. Authorities say 56-year-old tractor trailer driver Howard Young ran a stop sign at the intersection and crashed into a passenger vehicle carrying four people.

Dulce Flor Ortiz, a 12-year-old passenger in the vehicle, was killed. The driver of the passenger vehicle suffered major injuries, and two other passengers in the car suffered moderate injuries. Fowler Township, Ohio – June 7, 2012

A local firefighter from the Warren City Fire Department was killed Thursday night after a crash with an overturned tractor trailer in Fowler Township, Ohio. Authorities say that a tractor trailer struck the bridge overpass at King Graves Road, which caused the rig to overturn on the right side of the road. Tanker Truck Drives Over Car on Highway Killing One
Port Orange, Florida – June 2, 2012

Charges are pending against a tanker truck driver that crashed into a Mitsubishi passenger vehicle on the side of the Interstate 95, killing the driver inside the car. The fatal crash occurred in Port Orange, Florida at around 3:20 a.m. Killed instantly in the crash was 40-year-old Christopher White, who was parked on the shoulder of Interstate 95 when the tanker truck struck and ran over his vehicle. At this time, investigators are uncertain why White was stopped in the emergency lane. Investigators are also unsure why the tanker truck driver, Frank Moceri, swerved into the emergency lane. Moceri was uninjured in the crash. According to News Journal, the Saturday morning’s crash is still under investigation, and charges against Moceri are pending.

Woman Dead After Tractor Trailer Collision
Cayce, South Carolina – May 30, 2012

A woman was killed Wednesday night in a Cayce, South Carolina tractor trailer crash. Melissa H. Patterson, 43, died at the scene of the fatal truck accident when her 2005 Ford Focus collided with a tractor trailer that was making a left turn from an Interstate 26 exit ramp onto Charleston Highway. Authorities say Patterson was heading southbound on Charleston Highway when she struck the rear tandems on the trailer section of the truck. Woman Killed in Crash With Out-of-Control Big Rig
San Jose, California – May 24, 2012

A 49-year-old woman was killed Thursday morning in San Jose, California when a speeding tractor trailer tipped over onto the car she was traveling in. The fatal truck accident occurred just before 10:00 a.m. at McKee Road and the northbound Interstate 680 on ramp. Authorities say Hieu Thi Thu Huynh was sitting in the passenger seat of a Toyota Camry that was exiting the Interstate onto McKee Road when a big rig entering the Interstate with too much speed failed to take the curve and tipped the trailer section directly onto the right side of the Camry. Huynh was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. The Camry driver, whom authorities believe to be Huynh’s daughter, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The big rig driver, a man in his 30’s, was also taken to a hospital in critical condition. According to Mercury News, a California Highway Patrol officer said preliminary indications point to speed being a factor in the crash.

Huron, California – March 19, 2012

A rear-end collision involving two tractor trailers just north of Huron, California ended with one death on Monday afternoon. The fatal tractor trailer crash occurred at around 2 p.m. on the southbound side of Highway 269 at the Highway 198 intersection. Authorities say a big rig waiting at the stop sign was rear ended by another big rig. The man driving the rig that rear-ended the other truck was killed in the crash. The fatal crash occurred south of Lake Wales, Florida on Interstate 27 just before 5 a.m. Authorities say a southbound tractor trailer driver crossed over the median and collided with an oncoming Ford Expedition and a motorcyclist. The 47-year-old motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. The Ford Expedition driver was rushed to Lakeland Medical Center in critical condition. In addition to the tractor trailer crash, highway patrol reported that two other separate crashes occurred near the big rig crash site. $5.2 Million Settlement Reached in Fatal 2008 Truck Accident
Seattle, Washington – March 1, 2012

A company responsible for hiring a drug-using trucker who caused a fatal 2008 truck crash has settled a wrongful death lawsuit for $5.2 million. The allegations against freight broker Heyl Logistics state that the company failed to perform due diligence before hiring a trucker from motor carrier Washington Transportation. Seattle-based Washington Transportation did not perform drug tests on its employees, nor did the motor carrier possess valid insurance at the time of the fatal crash. According to court documents, trucker Kelly Linhart was inspecting his tractor trailer on the shoulder of Interstate 5 in Siskiyou Summit. Trucker Daniel Clarey, driving north on I-5, started to fall asleep at the wheel and clipped the mirror of another tractor trailer. Clarey awoke and pulled his rig hard to the right and hit Linhart and his tractor trailer, killing him instantly. Clarey, who pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide and driving under the influence of methamphetamine, is in the middle of a 40-month prison sentence. he will also pay nearly $8,000 in restitution for his crimes. The $5.2 million settlement will go to Kelly Linhart’s four children.

Five People Seriously Injured in Crash With Semi
Paramount, California – February 21, 2012

A three-year-old boy was among five people severely injured on Tuesday in an accident involving a semi trailer and a passenger vehicle. The accident occurred at around 2 p.m. on the northbound side of the 710 Freeway in Paramount, California. Authorities say a tractor trailer collided with a white passenger vehicle while changing lanes, sending the white car out of control. The white car then struck a 30-year-old Caltrans worker and his truck on the side of the freeway. A three-year-old boy, along with three other people in the passenger car all sustained major injuries in the crash and were rushed to local hospitals. Authorities are currently investigating Tuesday’s truck crash in Paramount.

Tractor Trailer Accident Victim Awarded $4.68 Million
Alameda, California – February 21, 2012

Hector Zuniga, the victim of a horrible tractor trailer accident that left him severely injured, was awarded $4.68 million in damages last week by a California jury. The Alameda County Circuit Court jury sided with Mr. Zuniga, who was rear-ended by a truck owned by Carroll Fulmer Logistics Corporation. The jury agreed with expert testimony from an accident reconstructor who testified that the Carroll Fulmer truck negligently caused the crash by speeding on the expressway. Mr. Zuniga’s injuries required devastating spinal surgeries that rendered him incapable of working. The jury held Florida-based Carroll Fulmer Logistics Corporation liable for all of Mr. Zuniga’s injuries and awarded him roughly $1.5 million for his medical bills and lost wages due to injury. The jury also awarded Mr. Zuniga over $1.5 million for pain and suffering from the accident.

Florida Man Critical After Semi Makes U-Turn
St. Johns County, Florida – February 20, 2012

A 25-year-old man is in critical condition after an accident with a tractor trailer on Monday. The crash occurred in St. Johns County, Florida at the intersection of State Road 16 and Factory Outlet Drive just before 2 p.m. Florida State Troopers say the driver of the tractor trailer made a U-turn directly into the path of an oncoming passenger vehicle driven by 25-year-old Charles Davis Jr., who then slammed into the rear of the trailer. The tractor trailer driver drove a short distance before realizing that the passenger vehicle was stuck to the rear of the trailer. Mr. Davis was taken to Orange Park Medical Center in critical condition. The tractor trailer driver was uninjured in the crash. A tractor trailer collided with three passenger vehicles Tuesday evening, killing one person. The fatal crash occurred on Interstate 70 in Columbus, Ohio. Authorities say a westbound tractor trailer hit a 2003 Mazda, a 1997 Dodge and a 2002 Toyota minivan after swerving to avoid slowed traffic. Authorities say the southbound tractor trailer crossed the median into the northbound lanes of the highway, colliding with a car containing two people. Massive Pileup on Florida’s I-75 Kills 11 and Injures 18

Authorities are still trying to piece together the horrible chain of events that took place in Florida on Interstate 75 Sunday morning when 12 passenger vehicles and six tractor trailers collided in a tragic accident that killed 11 people and injured 18 others. The fatal crash occurred at around 3:45 a.m. outside of Gainesville, Florida in the midst of heavy fog and smoke from a brush fire. Calls to 911 after the crash were frantic, as cars continued to collide in near darkness. It has been reported that a three-vehicle crash occurred only a few hours prior on the same strip of highway, also due to poor visibility. This prompted the Florida Highway Patrol to close the highway after midnight on Sunday. The Highway Patrol later decided to reopen Interstate 75, a decision that will certainly be prominently featured in the ongoing National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation.

Tractor Trailer Crashes in Work Zone Killing One and Injuring Three
Toledo, Ohio – January 24, 2012

The driver of a tractor trailer crashed into a work zone on the Ohio Turnpike on Tuesday morning, killing a maintenance worker and seriously injuring two others. The tractor trailer driver was also injured in the fatal crash. Authorities say the maintenance workers were repairing a bridge 30 miles outside of Toledo when the tractor trailer drifted into the work zone and hit three workers. One of the workers, 53-year-old Forest Fletcher, was killed in the crash. Two other maintenance workers and the tractor trailer driver had to be airlifted to local hospitals with serious injuries. Pomeroy, Washington – January 21, 2012

A woman was killed on Saturday afternoon when her vehicle collided with the trailer section of a semi truck. The fatal crash occurred on U.S. Highway 12 near Pomeroy, Washington, at around 3:45 p.m. According to authorities, the westbound tractor trailer jackknifed on the snowy highway while going around a curve and collided with an eastbound 2007 Jeep Liberty, killing the driver. One Dead in New Jersey Dump Truck Crash
Cherry Hill, New Jersey – January 19, 2012

A tri-axle dump truck hauling sand flipped over onto a passenger vehicle on Thursday afternoon in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, killing the driver of the car. The fatal crash occurred at around 11:50 a.m. on Berlin Road near Morris Drive. Authorities say the driver of the dump truck rolled over onto the passenger vehicle after a near collision with another car that was attempting to make a left turn. The sand in the truck spilled over and completely buried the car, police said, killing the woman inside. The driver of the dump truck was uninjured in the crash. The investigation continues.

Tractor Trailer Crosses Center Line and Kills One in Head-On Crash

A northbound tractor trailer crossed over the center line on Route 75 in Frederick County, Maryland, colliding head-on with a pickup truck. The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred early Tuesday morning. The tractor trailer driver was uninjured. One Dead and Three Injured After Big Rig Runs Car Off a Bridge
Buelton, California – January 12, 2012

One person was killed and three others were injured after a tractor trailer rear-ended a BMW passenger car, sending both vehicles off of a bridge on U.S. Highway 101 near Buelton, California. The fatal crash occurred at 2:40 p.m. on Thursday afternoon when the tractor trailer slammed into the BMW before driving off a bridge and plummeting into a creek where it burst into flames. The tractor trailer driver died at the scene. The collision left the BMW and its three occupants hanging over the side of the bridge. It took a tow truck and a U.S. Navy crane to get the BMW stable enough for emergency responders to rescue the 38-year-old driver, a 10-year-old girl and a 10-week-old infant. The driver and the 10-year-old girl had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital. The infant was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Authorities are currently looking into what caused the fatal tractor trailer crash on Highway 101.

Tractor Trailer Crash Kills Teen in Pennsylvania
Maidencreek Township, Pennsylvania – January 11, 2012

A 19-year-old man died on Wednesday night after his vehicle was struck by a tractor trailer on Route 222 in Maidencreek Township, Pennsylvania. The fatal crash occurred at around 10:30 p.m when a truck driver collided with 19-year-old Carl Pelham Jr.’s car, sending it into a guard rail. Authorities say Pelham was pronounced dead on the scene from multiple injuries. The truck driver sustained minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital. An investigation into what caused Wednesday night’s fatal tractor trailer crash is currently underway.

Big Rig Hits Car Killing Two in Pike County, Kentucky

A 57-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman were both killed Monday in pike County, Kentucky when the trailer section of a big rig crossed over the dividing line of U.S. 460 and slammed into the minivan the two were traveling in. The man and the woman, both from Grundy, Virginia, were pronounced dead on the scene. At this time, authorities are uncertain what caused the trailer section of the big rig truck to cross over the line and into oncoming traffic. The fatal crash occurred at a sharp curve in the highway near the Millard school. An accident reconstruction team was at the crash site Tuesday to piece together what happened. The investigation into the fatal truck crash in Pike County is currently ongoing.

Family of Tractor Trailer Crash Victim Awarded $8.5 Million in Wrongful Death Lawsuit
Porter, Maine – January 3, 2012

The jury in a New Hampshire wrongful death lawsuit has delivered a verdict, awarding $8.5 million to the family of a man killed in a 2008 accident involving a tractor trailer. John Paul Lacaillade II was killed on August 25, 2008 when he was run over by a tractor trailer after falling off his bicycle on Route 25 in Porter, Maine. According to local authorities, Lacaillade ran over some loose pavement while sprint training on his bicycle, which caused him to fall directly into the path of a Loignon Camp-Carr truck traveling on Route 25. The wrongful death lawsuit accused Loignon Camp-Carr of improperly training the truck driver involved in the accident. The allegations also stated that the truck driver should not have attempted to pass Lacaillade while going around a curve. The jury awarded $2.5 million to Mr. Lacaillade’s widow, $2.5 million to be split between Mr. Lacaillade’s two children and $3.5 million in damages and household services.
