Aviation Attorney Discusses Black Boxes & Egypt Air Flight 990

As speculation surrounded the crash of Egypt Air Flight 990, the NTSB determined the cause to be created by the relief first officer’s flight control inputs. The aircraft's flight data recorder is also known as the “black box” was found and its data can possibly contain crucial evidence in determining a cause for a crash. Aviation attorney, Paul Hedlund, tells Extra that the flight data recorder shows us what went wrong, while the flight voice recorder can tell us why. Mr. Hedlund discusses the evidence found on other black boxes from past accidents he has worked on. The boxes are constructed to withstand fires, deep-sea pressures, fluid, and other elements that would otherwise be harmful during or after a crash.
