The recent Sprout Organics baby food recall due to dangerous lead levels has once again highlighted the alarming presence of toxic heavy metals in products designed for our most vulnerable consumers: children.
Parents who fed their kids the affected products deserve to know how the latest baby food recall affects them. They should also know that emerging litigation against Sprout Organics and other manufacturers alleges a connection between exposure to dangerous amounts of lead, arsenic, and mercury in certain baby foods and the development of autism and ADHD in young children.
If your child was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) after consuming foods from Sprout Organics, you may qualify for a baby food lawsuit. Sprout Organics voluntarily recalled specific lots of their Sweet Potato, Apple and Spinach baby food pouches in September 2025 due to potentially elevated lead levels. The recall began on September 16, 2025, and was expanded on September 23, 2025, to include the following lot codes:
Where sold: Walgreens stores across 28 states including Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, plus online sales.
Important note: You can find the lot code and expiration date on the bottom strip on the back of the pouch. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall.
You can read more about the Sprout Organics baby food recall on the FDA website.
If you purchased any of the recalled Sprout Organics products, take these immediate steps:
Stop using the product immediately and do not feed it to your child. Even if your child has already consumed the product without apparent immediate effects, discontinue use immediately.
Return for a full refund. Take the recalled pouches back to the store where you purchased them for a complete refund. You do not need a receipt for most recall returns.
Keep documentation. Save your receipt and take photos of the product labels, lot codes, and expiration dates. This documentation may be important if you decide to pursue legal action.
Monitor your child. While no immediate illnesses have been reported, take note of any concerning symptoms and consult your pediatrician if you have questions about potential exposure.
The Sprout recall is part of a much larger crisis affecting the baby food industry. Research increasingly demonstrates a connection between exposure to heavy metals—including lead, arsenic, and mercury—and the development of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Studies show the devastating impact of heavy metal exposure:
Scientific research from around the world has found that children with autism often have elevated mercury levels, while early exposure to high lead levels significantly increases the risk of autism. Research has shown that even low-level exposure during critical developmental stages can alter neurological pathways and increase the risk of these devastating conditions.
The American Academy of Pediatrics confirms that no level of lead exposure is safe in children. Lead and other heavy metals can permanently affect a child's developing brain, lower IQ, and contribute to lifelong learning and behavioral problems.
Parents are taking legal action against baby food manufacturers, including Sprout Organics, through toxic baby food lawsuits. Wisner Baum serves as co-lead counsel in federal lawsuits consolidated in U.S. District Court, seeking justice for families whose children developed autism or ADHD after consuming contaminated baby food products. Our firm is a nationwide leader in this litigation, representing over 8,000 families.
The baby food litigation alleges that baby food companies:
A congressional report in 2021 revealed that baby food manufacturers had internal test results showing their products contained heavy metals at levels far exceeding any reasonable safety standards—in some cases up to 177 times higher than the EPA's limits for drinking water.
Sprout Organic Foods did not participate in the congressional subcommittee’s investigation, which raised concerns that the company may actually be hiding even higher levels of toxic heavy metals than other baby food brands. The company eventually provided details about its internal testing practices, and a second congressional report revealed that Sprout only tested its ingredients once per year and did no testing on its finished products sold in stores.
Investigators characterized Sprout’s practices as "the most reckless" among baby food manufacturers included in the government report.
Following the 2021 baby food report, parents across the country started filing lawsuits against Sprout Organics and other manufacturers for knowingly selling products containing arsenic, lead, and mercury. The current federal MDL (Case No. 3:24-md-03101-JSC) includes claims against major manufacturers, including Beech-Nut, Gerber, Hain Celestial (Earth's Best Organic), Nurture (Happy Family Organics), Plum Organics, Sprout Foods, and Walmart (Parent's Choice).
