Brent Wisner, Managing Partner of the law firm Wisner Baum, stated that Roundup, or glyphosate, is the most widely used pesticide in human history by a significant margin. He explained that the product was widely sprayed without sufficient personal protection after customers were told that glyphosate was safe.
"I think the important thing, though, is to be careful around the product right, be thoughtful about its use, and make sure you’re not exposing people or your family to a chemical that can cause cancer. I think restrict your exposure as much as possible, use protective gear when you can, and I think more importantly, we have to be cognizant of efforts by Monsanto and Bayer to use political means to try to avoid future liability." - Brent Wisner, Managing Partner, Wisner Baum
Wisner said that he worked with families and individuals in Wichita Falls who developed lymphoma as a result of using the pesticide. He said that the Monsanto papers revealed the harm to individuals exposed to the chemicals.
"We know from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, when it came out in 2015, almost a decade ago, that it is a problem with human carcinogens. Specifically, it’s linked to lymphoma. There have been dozens of studies that have directly linked human exposure to glyphosate and lymphoma, so in my mind, the science is pretty clearly there." - Brent Wisner, Managing Partner, Wisner Baum
Wisner said that Monsanto has removed glyphosate from its Roundup products and is now using alternative weed control methods.
"It took almost 20 years to get the truth exposed, 20 years to get that publication off the books, but it finally happened this year and it’s a testament to the resiliency of our scientific system: that when the truth comes out, and sometimes that requires lawsuits to do it, but when the truth comes out, we can set the record straight. My hope is that regulators who have previously relied upon this study realize their mistake and take action to protect consumers from the dangerous product." - Brent Wisner, Managing Partner, Wisner Baum
Wisner emphasized that families stay vigilant in taking protective measures and use other forms of weed control products.
